doug

You know what they say: nothing is coincidental. I was supposed to be a musician, but within one week my trombone got stolen and my Grandfather gave me a camera. Illustration is a portfolio of pictures made for print and projection. It is about contemporary work. However i have chosen to start with two old and symbolic images.

First is a picture of a duck in a colorful pond, taken at age 12 ... one of the first shot with the "Grandpa Camera". It won a prize in a local camera club ... striking a nerve in my ego.

Duck Pond Reflections won a prize in the Little Neck Camera Club contest

A dozen years later, Ted Russell, a Life magazine free lancer, introduced me to Tcholak Labs where he had all his work done. I was working at Basford Incorporated at the time and swung as much work as I could their way. I became a friend-student of the darkroom wizzard, Arthur Tcholakian, and he mentored me. It took years, but I eventually became a master printer in his style. Tcholak Labaroatories printed primarilary for Life Magazine shooters. Joseph Karsch was also a strong influence on me, and like Karsch Tcholak understood black. Those two are why I do too.

Since then my entire life has involved images (with a couple of notable exceptions). In the beginning it was pure photography, printed on paper. Then came the screen era: slide shows ... multi-image ... business theater. Then I became the "Watchout Guy".

As time passes, the start of the circle comes round again. Thirty years later, life drew me back to illustration, where I began. The illustrations are now made digitally, with a je ne sai quoi from a collection of 500,000 amassed film images. Most illustrations are mastered for fine art Giclée printing at mural sizes of at least 8 feet.

In the future this gallery will be expanded into an e-commerce site for images. Until then, simply contact me directly if there is anything you might want to hand on your walls.

Wavelengths is an abstract of neon lights at the Peppermill Casino. It was created as a scene from "Neon Magic," a Dataton Watchout show created for the Casino which is dedicated to the neon artists that make the Peppermill and neon fantasyland.

Detail from Giving & Receiving #1, a tryptich made for the 20-foot-high artium lobby of Quantum Audio Video's new building in Reno Nevada. The theme captures the spirit of "Communications" of which audio and video play a key role. The menu bar shows the entire picture pretty well; the picture box shows detail.

Detail from Giving & Receiving #2, a tryptich made for the 20-foot-high artium lobby of Quantum Audio Video's new building in Reno Nevada. The theme captures the spirit of "Communications" of which audio and video play a key role. The scene is derived from images gathered at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro as well as on the ascent. The antenna rises from Kilimanjaro's cinder cone. Rusting relics were shot in India. Since the menu bar shows the entire picture pretty well, the picture box shows a detail of it.

Detail from Giving & Receiving #3, a tryptich made for the 20-foot-high artium lobby of Quantum Audio Video's new building in Reno Nevada. The theme captures the spirit of "Communications" of which audio and video play a key role. This was originally to be paired with #1, but when I looked at them I thought: "hmmmm… maybe a bit too "green" for an AV company… we need something more techno." So #2 came to be. The menu bar shows the entire picture pretty well, the picture box shows a detail of it.

This is about as good an illustration as I can imagine for the expression "eye-popping" It's actually a moray eel shot at Scripps Oceanographic Institution for the Oceano show. In the show, the eel is animated, blowing bubbles and "talking."

River of Life was created as a theme illustration for the Oceano at the Peppermill Casino in Reno. It was used for everthing from the menu cover to the billion-dollar LED sign on Virginia Street. Since the menu bar shows the entire picture pretty well, the picture box shows a detail of it.

One night I was driving across the Yucatan. A lightning storm of world class proportiions engulfed everything… and I was in the middle of nowhere. You can imagine how seeing this 10-foot-wide display was like a religious experience, Since the menu bar shows the entire picture pretty well, the picture box shows a detail of it.
